Nubble Swim History
The Nubble Light Challenge, a 2.5 mile open ocean swim around the Nubble peninsula, was born after my son Josh and I searched for a fundraising swim event idea similar to a swim we completed in 2008. Our goal was to support mental health awareness as Josh’s older brother, Anthony, was experiencing mental health challenges. NAMI Maine, the Maine Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness provided resources and support for our family and was our logical choice for a fundraising partner.
The inaugural Nubble Light Challenge was launched in July 2010. Remarkably, 110 swimmers braved the challenging conditions and completed the swim. Over the subsequent seven years, the NLC raised over $150,000 for NAMI Maine. In the last three years, NLC contributed over $75,000 to the Michael Phelps Foundation. Notably, the Nubble Light Challenge even made it to the prestigious “top 50 open water swims” in the country!
This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support and invaluable guidance provided by the Town of York, the dedicated volunteers, and most importantly, the courageous swimmers who willingly took on this challenging swim.
Although the name of the swim is changing, the event lives on and will continue to be a must do event for all open water swimmers.
Best of luck to the Nubble Lighthouse Swim organizers, volunteers and swimmers.
